Hope Valley

Hope Valley
Hope Valley tells the story of two couples with widely different backgrounds and beliefs sharing life on a hill outside of Durham, NC. Hurley and Opal Cates are retired factory workers intent on living out quiet lives next to their adult son and his family. When the son sells his house to Renata and Danny, a young lesbian couple, the stage is set for a clash of cultures.
In alternately humorous and heart-rending passages, Hope Valley portrays each character’s struggle to promote his or her values and to understand the other’s. As such, it is a parable for finding common ground in the cultural divide that currently threatens our society.
Reviewer’s Praise
“The changes along Hope Valley Road in Manuel’s novel mirror the cultural changes
testing our nation. Some of his characters bend, some break. The ones still standing in
the end persevere with the strength, grace, and humility that we will all need to survive.”
